Product development

Bacterial biofilms contribute significantly to a wide range of disease states as well as problems in consumer healthcare and in the industrial environment.

Effective solutions to combating biofilm growth, and accelerating its degradation, which are safe, non-toxic and non-biocidal will open multiple new markets, as well as provide adjuncts with, or replacements for, existing products in already established markets. These constitute a number of multi-billion dollar opportunities.

QuoNova's QSBs offer just such a smart microbial control.

They are proprietary synthetic small molecules, with very strong patent protection, which:

  • inhibit biofilm growth from gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria in static and flowing systems
  • inhibit toxin release and exoenzyme expression
  • synergize with antibiotics
  • show no toxicity in in vitro and in vivo safety studies
  • are non bactericidal, avoiding selection pressure towards resistance
  • allow incorporation in, coating on and release from multiple materials
  • inhibit biofilm growth on QSB-containing matrices

A further unique strength of our technology platform is that it permits generation of tailor-made small molecules for specific applications. Thus, QuoNova has compounds with differing selectivities and potencies for clinically relevant bacterial strains or with properties suiting them for different routes of administration in therapeutic indications or different modes of application in consumer care or industrial environments. This also allows effective leveraging of preclinical, formulation development, manufacturing and regulatory activities.

Following this approach, QuoNova, alone and together with its partners, is optimizing compounds for selected indications or applications. QuoNova's primary focus is on products for preventing biofilm-related infections in respiratory disease, wound healing and medical devices in the healthcare environment, and on oral care and eye care products in the consumer environment.

QuoNova and its partners are also evaluating approaches which modify biofilm growth for multiple industrial applications.
